Dublin cycle to raise money for COPD patients
Third year of ‘Get Breathless for COPD’ cycle event raise over €11k for charity
Cycling along Dublin’s scenic coast, participants of the third ‘Get Breathless for COPD’ charity event raised €11,700 for COPD Support Ireland and pulmonary rehabilitation services.
Supported by A.Menarini Pharmaceuticals and COPD Support Ireland, the event was led by Dublin’s 6 time All Ireland winning star Philly McMahon and consisted of both a 50km and 100km route around Dublin’s scenic East Coast. Cyclists of all abilities joined together this summer at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium for a unique one-day cycle ride along Dublin’s coastal line towards Bray, around to Howth Head and back to the Aviva Stadium.
It is estimated that almost 500,000 people in Ireland have COPD, with more than 200,000 enduring a moderate or severe form of disease and only half are likely to have been diagnosed. This cycle helped to raise awareness of COPD, highlighting the importance and role of exercise in improving overall well-being and quality of life for COPD patients. The “Get Breathless for COPD” annual cycle raises vital funds for COPD Support Ireland, a charity founded in 2013 to support those living with COPD. COPD Support Ireland is the only national COPD support and advocacy body, bringing together local support groups from around the country, to help those living with, and caring for, someone with COPD.
According to Francis Lynch, General Manager of A. Menarini Pharmaceuticals Ireland: “The 'Get breathless for COPD' cycle aims to improve awareness about COPD in Ireland, highlight the importance that exercise plays in improving quality of life for COPD patients and, finally, to raise much needed funds for COPD Support Ireland. A.Menarini Pharmaceuticals was delighted to be involved with this positive initiative for the third year.”
